World Tiger Day!

Technically this post is a bit late, but better late than never right? July 29 is World Tiger Day, and this past Tuesday was the only the 4th official world tiger day. The whole purpose of this day is to raise awareness about tigers, which are endangered. There are various factors causing this major issue including: habitat loss (due to agriculture, animal husbandry, urbanization, and logging), illegal poaching (for rugs, clothing, medicine that doesn't work by the way), intolerance by locals (tigers enjoy eating cattle, but then again who doesn't?). If you're wondering how you can help save tigers, but don't think you can because you don't come in contact with tigers regularly or already don't buy products made from tigers. There are things you can do, other than donate to tiger organizations! They are simple things, that not only benefit tigers but the environment in general. For instance buy: recycled or FSC certified paper and wood products, sustainable palm oil (forests are frequently destroyed to plant monoculture palm tree farms), and Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade certified products. Try to reduce your carbon footprint, by following the 5Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, + Refuse). Following the 5Rs is incredibly useful when shopping at sales, mainly new clothes to prevent unnecessary purchases. Finally, the most import thing you can do (other than raise awareness) is foster an appreciation and respect for nature. Take your friends, significant others, and kids out in nature, and observe the animals in their natural habitat, but do this at a distance. You do not want to make the animal uncomfortable or feel threatened. Fostering a healthy respect and love of nature, is the best way to encourage and promote conservation, because why would save something you do not feel connected to you?
