Blood Nails...
There’s been intensive coverage about nail salon practices
over the past couple of weeks, and this isn’t really a big issue in my city. Therefore,
I’m not going to discuss it to great lengths, you can check out this
article for more info. The gist of it is that many nail salon owners,
especially those in New York City, are running the equivalent of sweatshops for
nail service. The people that work in the shops are poorly paid (if it all) and
live in terrible conditions (full of people and small spaces) because of said
lack of pay; not to mention that tip you’re giving isn’t really going to them. Now
you may be thinking how can I tell if the nail salon that I’m patronizing take
care of their workers or exploits them? Simple (well sort of), generally if it’s
too good to be true, then it probably is. That $20 mani pedi? The workers are
being exploited. Next time you think about that getting your nails done for a
deal that are too good to be true, it probably is and you should rethink it and
go somewhere else that may cost more, but at least you’ll have a clear conscience
without blood nails.
